Lloyd Maepeza Gina
As a child in New Georgia, Lloyd Maepeza Gina saw and suffered when the War with Japan intruded into
his own islands. His later education took him to Fiji, a country that captivated him and challenged his
identity. He experienced life during British rule and beyond to Independence of the Solomon Islands in
1978. As a civil servant and the first Speaker of the Solomons Parliament he gained a wide understanding
of the many societies in his own islands and of governance issues in this diverse country. He earned
the respect of many and a knighthood from a grateful government. But his life story is more than an account
of the issues of administration, public life and politics, and of journeys within and outside the islands. It is a
reflection too of the colourful and varied history of his ancestors – from the head-hunters and their victims,
labour recruits to Fiji and the early converts to Christianity, to his father's ordination as a Methodist
minister – each generation has left a legacy for Maepeza. This book provides vivid insights into the
richness of his family and spiritual life and how this gave meaning to his strivings, as well as support in his
disappointments.
